STUDENT ESSAY
First place:
a desktop computer valued at $700 AND $200.
Second place: $100.
How to enter:
- Please distribute the Essay Contest Flyer for each student in grades three through five.
- Ask teachers to discuss the requirements of the essay with students.
- Collect submissions from students and have a committee select the top three entries for your school. *See directions for submitting essays below.
Essay Requirements:
Essay question: How Does Math Matter to You?
In the essay, students must include responses to the following questions:
- How does math impact you in your daily life?
- How will you use math in your future?
- Why will the world need good mathematical thinkers?
Essay requirements:
- Essays may be typed or handwritten and should be between
2 and 3 pages in length.
- Written papers that are not legible will be eliminated, so please encourage students to write clearly.
- Place a cover sheet on top for the student’s name, school, and grade level.
- Do NOT write the student’s name on the pages of the essay.
How to submit the student essays:
- Please have a committee read through essays submitted to decide on the top 3 essays for your school.
- Submit both the DRAFT and FINAL COPY of the top 3 essays to the attention of Shelley Fritz, Elementary Math Department, 901 E. Kennedy Blvd, Tampa, Florida 33601 (or through school mail to Route 7).
- E-mailed entries will not be accepted.
- Please send all three student entries for your school in one envelope.
Deadline for entries:
- All entries must be received by December 4, 2007.
- Winners will be announced the first week of January and will be recognized at our winter dinner meeting (date to be announced).
